“I never thought I could do it. Because I love indoor plants and I’ve never been able to keep it alive for more than like a year. So I was really apprehensive at first because I think I just kill everything that’s green. Black thumb. But my experience has been great.”

We’ve had some exciting news to share! A new community garden is coming to West Tampa’s MLK Park, a prominent food desert, as a part of our USDA Urban Agriculture Grant with the City of Tampa.
While we have an initial garden design, we can’t build a community garden without community! We held our first outreach meeting last week and met Lisa - a passionate balcony gardener who started gardening in March to grow fresh food for her and her children. Stay tuned for more updates on our Healthy MLK Park, including what name the community picks for their new garden 🌱💚

Tropical sage is a native perennial wildflower that bees, large butterflies, and hummingbirds can’t resist 🐝🌿🦋 It typically blooms in summer and fall but can bloom year-round in many parts of Florida. With the theme "Growing Greener Generations" their speech "COCG`s Garden Steps at Healthy 22nd Street Garden - A Successful Model of Urban Agriculture" will talk about our successful Garden Steps program in East Tampa, soon to be replicated in West Tampa through the USDA Urban Agriculture Grant.

Our first “Ask Kitty” question came from Sheryl at Mustard Seed Garden in Lutz who asked if her and her garden members could schedule a visit to Tampa Heights Community Garden. There is no better education than sharing knowledge and learning what other community gardens are doing!

August’s Gardener of The Month is Tyler from The Sustainable Living Project! Tyler is in high school and found SLP through Eventbrite as he needed volunteer hours for his Bright Futures Scholarship. While he is brand new to gardening, he already loves the great atmosphere and being connected with nature.
Gardens are always seeking volunteers, so please let us know if you, or anyone you know, would like to help out!
