About the VISTA Gardens, Carrollwood Village
VISTA stands for Village Institute of Sustainable Technologies & Agriculture. VISTA’s mission is to provide education and to serve as a sustainable model for organic gardening, native landscaping, and related technologies while providing opportunities to participate in healthy outdoor activities, responsible environmental leadership, growing organic food, and community building. VISTA is a volunteer-led, non-profit 501(c)(3) [Tax ID Number: 26-2532379] organization that relies on support from our community and our members in order to continue its mission. By donating time and funds to VISTA, the community and our members ensure our garden’s continued vitality as well as the success of the goals outlined above.

We’ve had some exciting news to share! A new community garden is coming to West Tampa’s MLK Park, a prominent food desert, as a part of our USDA Urban Agriculture Grant with the City of Tampa.
While we have an initial garden design, we can’t build a community garden without community! We held our first outreach meeting last week and met Lisa - a passionate balcony gardener who started gardening in March to grow fresh food for her and her children. Stay tuned for more updates on our Healthy MLK Park, including what name the community picks for their new garden 🌱💚

🌿November is a great time to fertilize once your transplants have been in the ground for 3 weeks, or your seedlings have several mature leaves. Use fish emulsion (2 tbsp per gallon of water) to feed the soil, and repeat in 2-3 weeks.
🌿Check for pests, especially cabbage loopers (last slide), which leave irregular holes in leaves. These pests target brassicas, lettuce, parsley, spinach, and tomatoes. Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.) is an effective biological control; spray it on the undersides of leaves. It kills caterpillars by disrupting their digestion. You may also see natural predators like parasitic wasps helping control the population.
🌿November can be dry, so ensure your plants get enough water. Your harvest of lettuce, kale, chard, and beans is just around the corner...hooray!
