At Seeds of Faith Community Garden, we’re always looking to plant varieties that not only grow well in our local climate but also tell a story of resilience and innovation. This year, we’re excited to be planting the Beauregard sweet potato, a variety with a rich history and a significant impact on Louisiana’s agricultural industry.
A Sweet Potato with a Purpose
The Beauregard sweet potato was developed in 1987 at the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station in Baton Rouge. At the time, Louisiana’s sweet potato industry was facing serious challenges. Farmers were struggling with issues like poor storage and high vulnerability to diseases, which severely impacted both the quality and quantity of the crop. The industry needed a solution—a variety that could not only withstand these obstacles but also thrive under the demanding conditions of the region.
Bred for Resilience and Productivity
Named after Confederate General Pierre G.T. Beauregard, the Beauregard sweet potato was specifically bred to address the issues facing farmers. It is known for its disease resistance, particularly to the soil-borne fungus that had plagued Louisiana’s sweet potato crops for years. Its ability to withstand common diseases, along with its excellent storage qualities, made it a game-changer for farmers looking to revitalize their crops and improve the economics of sweet potato farming in the region.
Not only does Beauregard possess remarkable resistance to disease, but it also delivers a high yield and superior quality. Its smooth, reddish-brown skin and bright orange flesh make it a favorite in both fresh markets and processing, ensuring that it remains a staple in kitchens and pantries around the world.
A Turning Point for Louisiana’s Sweet Potato Industry
The Beauregard sweet potato’s introduction marked a turning point for Louisiana’s sweet potato industry. It was a variety that could be grown in large quantities and store well, ensuring that the crop could be harvested and sold throughout the year. This helped stabilize prices and made Louisiana sweet potatoes more competitive in the marketplace, both domestically and internationally.
Beyond its commercial success, the Beauregard variety is also a symbol of how agricultural research and innovation can breathe new life into a struggling industry. The impact of this one variety extends far beyond its role in the fields—it has revitalized local economies, created jobs, and brought renewed attention to Louisiana’s agricultural heritage.
Planting a Piece of History
As we plant Beauregard sweet potatoes in our garden this year, we’re reminded of the power of innovation and community. Just as the sweet potato helped rebuild an industry, we too can use our garden as a means to nurture, grow, and give back to the local community. Whether it’s providing fresh produce to local food pantries or educating our neighbors about sustainable gardening, our work in the garden carries forward the spirit of renewal and hope.
Celebrate with Us at the Yam Jam!
To celebrate the harvest and the rich history of the Beauregard sweet potato, we’re thrilled to announce our upcoming Yam Jam on September 7th! This fun, family-friendly event is for all ages. It’s a chance to enjoy the fruits (or yams!) of our labor and connect with fellow garden enthusiasts.
Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just curious about sweet potatoes, the Yam Jam is the perfect opportunity to see our garden in action and take home inspiration for your own kitchen and garden.
Stay tuned as we follow the journey of the Beauregard sweet potatoes through the growing season. We look forward to sharing more about how these resilient plants thrive in our garden and how you can incorporate them into your own garden at home.
Happy planting!
