The Mustard Seed Community Garden welcomes you!
About the Mustard Seed Community Garden
For over 10 years at the Mustard Seed Garden in Lutz, volunteers have been growing organic fruits and vegetables on nearly 1,300 sq feet of raised beds consisting of 12 rotating vegetable crop beds and 2 blueberry bush beds, along with pollinator flowers and summer cover crop of sunn hemp.
Our primary function is to provide fresh, organic produce to local community food distribution centers focusing on underserved populations, primarily Wellbuilt City Kinship Free Market and the Village Presbyterian Community Pantry; as well as providing fresh salad ingredients to the Faith in Action street ministry group at Lutz Community Church feeding the homeless in Tampa.
We also offer an “Adopt a Plot” program for folks interested in “leasing” a 4’ x 4’ space to grow their own vegetables. Our primary source of income is through holding occasional “pay as you will” sales of either our produce or foods our volunteers have prepared using our produce. Typical annual harvest is approximately 300 lbs, which in 2023 included blueberries, broccoli, carrots, green beans, assorted herbs (basil, parsley, thyme, rosemary, lemongrass, cilantro) and greens (kale, collards, Swiss chard, mustard), lettuce, long beans, peppers, radish, sweet potatoes, tomatillos, tomatoes, and turnips.

Our very own Nate “Nature” Farley celebrated his 27th birthday this week! Nate has been gardening for most of his life, and professionally for the past five years.
A few fun Nate facts:
🌱He is a thespian 🎭
🌱He doesn’t have social media
🌱His favorite color is lavender
🌱Gardening has changed his life immensely (listen to hear why!)
Statistics show that gardening has a wide range of health outcomes including reductions in depression and anxiety, stress, mood disturbance, and BMI as well as increases in quality of life, sense of community, physical activity levels, and cognitive function.
COCG encourages YOU to start, no matter your gardening level! Visit our website to find the community garden near you or sign up for our IFAS Community Gardening Curriculum with the first cohort starting in February.

We’ve had some exciting news to share! A new community garden is coming to West Tampa’s MLK Park, a prominent food desert, as a part of our USDA Urban Agriculture Grant with the City of Tampa.
While we have an initial garden design, we can’t build a community garden without community! We held our first outreach meeting last week and met Lisa - a passionate balcony gardener who started gardening in March to grow fresh food for her and her children. Stay tuned for more updates on our Healthy MLK Park, including what name the community picks for their new garden 🌱💚

A trip to 15th Street Farm is not complete without vibrant, flourishing vegetables, an impromptu meal (or two) from Emmanuel, collaboration, and Juan and Jacob 🐾
This urban educational farm near downtown St Petersburg facilitates learning and community building around healthy food from soil to fork, and is truly doing amazing things. From tastings, to yoga and brunch, to cooking classes and more, this special spot is cultivating good soil, community, and health in a very chic, worldly way.
We showed their Development and Program Director, Lauren, how to utilize the new COCG website to upload their garden events and volunteer opportunities. Visit our site (link in bio) to see all the garden related events and volunteer opportunities across West Central Florida!
