The Garden
About the Seminole Heights Community Garden
The Seminole Heights Community Garden was founded in 2009 and has thrived at its current 6114 River Terrace location since 2017. We’re a volunteer-driven organic garden providing members and their families access to safe, healthy and affordable fruits and vegetables. Included in our mission is the promotion of conservation practices, creation and enhancement of green spaces, and educational, artistic and locally driven activities to stimulate community participation and growth. Ultimately, we garden for the sake of gardening, enjoying good food and good friendships.
It takes a community. We could not be as successful as we are without the hard work and dedication of the volunteers who contribute their time.

“I never thought I could do it. Because I love indoor plants and I’ve never been able to keep it alive for more than like a year. So I was really apprehensive at first because I think I just kill everything that’s green. Black thumb. But my experience has been great.”

We’ve had some exciting news to share! A new community garden is coming to West Tampa’s MLK Park, a prominent food desert, as a part of our USDA Urban Agriculture Grant with the City of Tampa.
While we have an initial garden design, we can’t build a community garden without community! We held our first outreach meeting last week and met Lisa - a passionate balcony gardener who started gardening in March to grow fresh food for her and her children. Stay tuned for more updates on our Healthy MLK Park, including what name the community picks for their new garden 🌱💚

Jennifer from VISTA Gardens in Carrollwood explains how to harvest tropical sage seeds! Tropical sage is a native perennial wildflower that bees, large butterflies, and hummingbirds can’t resist 🐝🌿🦋 It typically blooms in summer and fall but can bloom year-round in many parts of Florida. With the theme "Growing Greener Generations" their speech "COCG`s Garden Steps at Healthy 22nd Street Garden - A Successful Model of Urban Agriculture" will talk about our successful Garden Steps program in East Tampa, soon to be replicated in West Tampa through the USDA Urban Agriculture Grant.
